BUCKHANNON — The Upshur Parish House, located in Buckhannon, West Virginia, will host a 30-Year Celebration at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 9.
Since 1992, the Upshur Parish House, a mission project of the W.Va. United Methodist Church, has assisted with basic needs for low-income Upshur County families. Although it originally began in response to the Flood of 1985 and the closing of several local coal mines that occurred shortly after the flood, several area churches of various denominations had been collaborating to assist those in need for many years before.
The Upshur Parish House formalized those efforts to “love thy neighbor” in the spring of 1992. Today, the Upshur Parish House offers various services and programs to its neighbors in need, including a food pantry, rent and utility financial assistance, holiday food boxes, clothing vouchers, thrift store, newborn layettes, hot lunches, backpacks and school supplies, and referral to other agencies and community organizations.
The Parish House is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and its thrift store, The Clothes Closet, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Approximately 75-100 families visit the Parish House each week for assistance.
In addition to recognizing the Upshur Parish House, Buckhannon mayor Robbie Skinner be on hand to present a special award. Refreshments will be served as well.
