Softball Lady ‘Cats take two from Glenville State

BUCKHANNON, W.Va.– Alli Robinson’s fourth-inning blast helped the West Virginia Wesleyan (33-14-1, 23-7 MEC) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Glenville State Pioneers (17-26, 13-18 MEC).

Game One
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the first off of an unearned run.

The Lady ‘Cats would equalize in the bottom of the first when Molly Osborne drove a ball to left-center to score Grace Hightower from first base. WVWC would take the lead in the second Hightower roped a double of her own to score Megan McMackin and take a 2-1 lead.

The scoring continued in the third when Destiny Alvarado dropped down a perfect bunt on a safety squeeze to score Taylor Swartz and, in a heads-up play, advanced to second when the Pioneers left it unoccupied.

Glenville State cut into the lead in the fourth on an RBI single to make it 3-2.

Alli Robinson would put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the fourth when she drilled the Pioneer offering over the left-centerfield fence for a two-run blast and made it 5-2 Lady ‘Cats.

Hannah Hudson (18-4) earned the win in game one throwing a complete game. Hudson allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out six Pioneers.

Game Two
The nightcap featured a back and forth affair, the Lady Bobcats drawing the final blow. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first. Then, in the bottom half of the inning, Robinson stroked a two-RBI double to left-center to score Hightower and Osborne on the play. GSU would tie it in the top of the second on a solo homer to left.

Grace Hightower would drive home a run in the bottom of the frame after she lined one back off the pitcher’s glove for an infield single and scoring Alvarado to make it 3-2. The Pioneers would again tie it in the third to make it 3-3 before Gracie Payne singled down the left-field line to score McMackin from second base and make it 4-3.

The Pioneers would seemingly take control of the game in the fourth when they chased starter Abigail O’Shields from the contest as they scored three runs in the frame to make it 6-4. But, as they had done all day, the Lady Bobcats called on Robinson for one final comeback in the bottom of the fourth. With a base open, the Pioneers pitched to Robinson. In what proved to be a costly mistake, Robinson deposited the 0-1 offering from the Pioneer hurler over the left-field fence for a three-run blast and gave the Lady ‘Cats all the runs they would need.

Hannah Hudson relieved O’Shields in the fourth inning and would improve to 19-4. Hudson twirled 3.2 innings and surrendered an unearned run on five hits, and struck out a pair.
