BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan College men’s soccer team had their hands full when nationally-ranked Notre Dame College came to town on Sunday.
But despite facing the 13th-ranked Falcons, it was the Bobcats who got on the board early when Hazuki Hashizume played a ball over the top of the defense to the head of Matthew Bentley, who placed it over the Notre Dame keeper to give Wesleyan the early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
The visiting Falcons would answer in the 23rd minute when Guilherme Albuquerque buried a shot from 25-yards out.
Notre Dame gained the lead for good not long after when Paolo Termine played a ball through to Nicholas Felician who had a one on one with the keeper. Felician placed it past the keeper and the racing Bobcat defense to make it 2-1.
Felician scored again in the the 38th minute when Arthur Favero chipped a ball over the defense and Felician did the rest, slotting it past Wesleyan’s keeper.
Midway through the second half, the score remained 3-1 as things got progressively chippier, with yellows being issued on both sides.
In the 77th minute, Notre Dame put together an offensive attack that led to Varis Khera placing a pass to Athur Favero, who drilled a shot to the right corner from 10-yards out to put the game at the final 4-1 margin.
The win was the 11th of the year for the Falcons. Wesleyan, meanwhile, has struggled to find a rhythm and are just 2-9-2 on the season. One of those wins was against Concord, who they’ll next face on the road Thursday.
