Bucs win game after 11-day delay

PHILIPPI — A soccer game that started 11 days ago finally came to an end Saturday morning.

The Oct. 2 boys soccer game between Philip Barbour and Buckhannon-Upshur was delayed in the 35th minute due to weather with the Bucs controlling a slim 3-2 margin thanks to a pair of goals by Ryan Hurst and a penalty kick score by Cam Ware.

As the game resumed, the Colts evened things up early in the second half. But their advantage wouldn’t last long — less than a minute, actually. On the ensuing kickoff, Tyler Sandreth took the ball and played an arching pass over the Colt defense, where Hurst picked it up and slotted a shot far post to complete his hat trick and put the score at 4-3 in favor of the Bucs.

Dawson Carpenter added some insurance for B-U in the 58th minute, scoring on a shot from the top of the penalty area.

“I wasn’t sure how our team would respond with the 8 a.m. start and the odd situation of only playing five minutes of a half then right into the second,” Buccaneer coach Mike Donato said. “It took us a little time to get into our game, but once we did I thought we played well. It was also good to get a win to finish out the regular season and give us a boost heading into sectional play.”

The Bucs controlled a 12-6 edge in shots on goal and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks. Logan Kelley made four saves for Buckhannon-Upshur, while Cody Cooper had six for the Colts.

Postseason play now awaits the Bucs as the regular season is officially over.
