BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (2-17, 1-16) women’s basketball team fell at home versus West Virginia State (17-5, 13-4) on Saturday afternoon by a 102-69 score inside Rockefeller Center.
WVWC Leaders
Symphonie Bryant-Brown and Electra Allembert were both in double-figures for points. Bryant-Brown scored 17 points, with seven coming from the charity stripe. Allembert made five buckets to collect 10 points. Malaika Kimmons grabbed 11 rebounds while Courtney Wilfong dished out eight assists.
West Virginia State Leaders
Five WVSU players earned double-digit point totals with Destiny Fields leading the way with 17. Shelby Harmeyer converted five shots from beyond the arc. Zakorrah Russell facilitated the offense with six assists.
Inside the First Half
The visiting team started the game by scoring nine straight points. The Lady ‘Cats trimmed the WVSU lead to two points following a seven-point scoring run, the team’s best scoring run of the game. The Yellow Jacket lead grew to nine points with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter. The visitors led by as many as 16 in the first quarter. Wesleyan finished the quarter strong and cut the lead to single digits by the end of the first quarter. WVSU led by 13 in the second quarter when Daveona Hatchell and Courtney Wilfong each scored a jump shot to put the score at 33-24 with 7:15 in the half. The Yellow Jackets sparked a 17-point run and took a commanding 50-24 lead. The WVSU surplus grew to 30 points as the road team led 60-30 at halftime.
Inside the Second Half
WVSU kept things rolling early on in the third half and built their largest lead of the game with 6:44 remaining in the third quarter. Bryant-Brown scored 11 of her 17 points in the third quarter, making two three-pointers and five free throws. Wesleyan was outscored 42-39 in the second half and fell by a final score of 102-69.
