ELKINS – The Buckhannon-Upshur freshman Buccaneers won a thriller on the road against the Elkins Tigers in a 57-55 victory Wednesday evening.
It was the first victory of the year for head coach Roberta Hatcher and her freshman Bucs, leaving them with a 1-6 record.
The Bucs trailed by a 49-38 score heading into the final frame but outscored Elkins by a 19-6 count for the two-point win.
“I am proud of our effort tonight,” stated Hatcher. “We played much more consistent tonight and were able to have a strong fourth quarter. We played well and fought hard for our first win.”
The Bucs took an early 8-6 lead after one quarter with Damion White and Jonas Barton each putting in four points.
The Bucs narrowly lost the second quarter by a 20-19 margin with Barton putting in nine points, White four points, and Jevon Westfall, Kaiden Marks and Joseph Shipman two each.
They still led at the break by a 27-26 score.
The Bucs couldn’t slow down Elkins in the third quarter as they dropped it by a 23-11 margin.
White had seven of the 11 points in the quarter with Marks and Zikiyah Oliver getting two each. That left the Bucs down by the 49-38 score.
The Bucs dominated the fourth quarter taking it by 13 points for the win as Westfall went off for 10 points while Slaton Kowalski added three, and Barton, Oliver and White two each. White led all scorers with 17 points while Barton chipped in with 13 and Westfall 12 for the Bucs.
AJ Friedman led Elkins with 15 points.
The Bucs will be back in action Thursday hosting Lewis County at 6 p.m.
