COVID-19 death toll in West Virginia crosses 4,700 on Thursday, DHHR says

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 6,934 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 472 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (125), Barbour (94), Lewis (65), Randolph (101) and Webster (74) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of two active cases in the last 24 hours.

Nineteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 73-year old female from Raleigh County, a 58-year old male from Nicholas County, a 74-year old female from Putnam County, a 63-year old male from Webster County, a 45-year old female from Kanawha County, a 62-year old male from Preston County, a 78-year old male from Kanawha County, a 71-year old female from Preston County, a 77-year old female from Ohio County, an 86-year old female from Barbour County, a 56-year old male from Wirt County, a 77-year old female from Marion County, a 62-year old female from Putnam County, a 36-year old male from Marion County, a 54-year old male from Putnam County, an 80-year old female from Wood County, a 68-year old male from Mercer County, an 81-year old female from Wood County, and a 67-year old male from Jefferson County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of November 18, 2021, there are currently 6,934 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 19 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,717 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 522 residents are hospitalized with the virus (74% unvaccinated, 26% vaccinated), with 169 currently in intensive care (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated) and 98 on a ventilator (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 7.75%.

A total of 912,460 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 51% of the state.
