Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital sponsoring Thanksgiving Walk/Run at Jackson’s Mill

Weston, W.Va. — Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is sponsoring the Third Annual Gobble Gallop on Thanksgiving Day beginning at 9 AM at Jackson’s Mill. Participants should meet at Mount Vernon Dining Hall for the start of the race.

Registration is $5 and can be done online at https://webscorer.com/register?raceid=250267 or register in person that morning beginning at 8:00 AM. There will be awards for top three male/female finishers.

For 14 years, Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital coordinated the annual Weston 5K and before the pandemic, the Hospital had collaborated with local non-profits such as the American Cancer Society, Saint Patrick School, and the City of Weston to create a walk/run in each month of the year. The goal of the collaboration was to encourage people to walk/run for their health. West Virginia and Lewis County have very poor health statistics and organizers hope to encourage people get out and walk and become healthier.

“There are many reasons for residents to take up walking or running as a healthy habit,” said Kevin Stalnaker, Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Chief Administrative Officer. “We are committed to helping area residents choose a healthier lifestyle and our walk/runs are a great way to start.”

It is an unfortunate fact that the walking rate for most Americans has fallen dramatically in the past few decades. Walking provides a variety of benefits for people. Being consistent in one’s walking exercise routine is one of the most important factors in developing a healthy physical activity program. It is also a great way to lose weight, walking 20 extra minutes daily will on average burn off 7 pounds of body fat per year.

As part of the effort to reenergize the local walk/runs, Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital announced that there will be a Cookies and Cocoa Run on December 11; a Snowball Run on January 8; and the Groundhog Run on February 5 at the track at 230 Hospital Plaza, in Weston.
