BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan’s women tennis team came from behind twice against host Bluefield State to capture a thrilling 4-3 win Saturday.
The Lady Bobcats got clutch play from Julia Yanes and Sai Sakamoto to turn a 3-2 deficit into a win. Yanes held on to win in three close sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and moments later Sakamoto closed out her opponent 7-6, 6-3 giving Wesleyan the win.
Wesleyan runs their record to 3-0 this fall with the win, while BSU lost for the first time in four starts
Earlier in the day, Wesleyan took a 5-0 win over Johnson C. Smith of Charlotte. The Lady ‘Cats took all three doubles points to start fast and then got solid play from their lineup, top to bottom, to turn back the Bulls.
“We had a very nice match with Bluefield, just a good college tennis match,” said head coach Marc Walters. “With such a young team, I was really looking to find how we would hold up traveling, playing twice in a day, and playing a team with momentum like Bluefield had going.
“The freshmen stepped up all day and in the end we had a great effort from Julia and Sai to steal a win.”
