Soccer ‘Cats upset by winless Concord, 3-1

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (6-5-1, 4-5-1) men’s soccer team scored first on Sunday (Oct. 17) against Concord (1-11-0, 1-9-0) before conceding three unanswered goals to the Mountain Lions in a 3-1 loss at Culpepper Stadium.

In the first half, Zacharias Kohring lofted a through ball to Tanner Amos over the top of the Mountain Lion back line. Amos headed the ball down to his feet and beat the CU keeper to give WVWC an early 1-0 advantage just six minutes into the game. Concord responded eight minutes later when Michael Shelor got past the Bobcat defense and beat the keeper Logan Nelson.

Concord took the lead in the 26th minute when a penalty was awarded after Connor Hartwell inadvertently had the ball deflect off of his hand inside the penalty area. Piyo Debesay converted the penalty to hand the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The second half saw a flurry of attempts from the Bobcat attack. Wesleyan was close, but unable to convert the chances. Concord put the game away in the 89th minute when Ted Penn broke through the Bobcat defense and tucked it away for a goal.

WVWC is back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 20) in a road game versus Wheeling at 4 p.m.
