Garnet Russell

Garnet Russell, 93, of Ellamore, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, W.Va.

He was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Ten Mile, W.Va., a son of the late Willie and Francis Tenney Russell. He is survived by his wife Madeline Wood; one son, Ralph Russell of Ellamore; two brothers, Grover Russell of Queens, W.Va. and Nelson Russell and wife Mary of Cutright Chapel, W.Va.; one sister, Evelyn Winkler of Buckhannon and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Abe Russell and four sisters, Myrtle Kelley, Opal Harper, Della Hoover and Rita Zirkle.

Mr. Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked in the coal mine’s and coal tipples for 18 to 20 years for Long Run Mines and Red Stone Mines. As a young man he worked for Woody Lumber Company in the woods, he also worked on several saw mills. He retired from West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Mr. Russell loved to plant a garden, be outdoors, hunting and fishing. As a young man he enjoyed Native Brook Trout Fishing and Ginsenging.

There were many good friends, who brought food, called to see how he was, and the most important thing was always going to church, even when he couldn’t walk.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the Ellamore Fire Dept. for their many fast responses during his long illness and to his caregiver Linda for all her help.

Friends will be received Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 am. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Bryan Sin Clair officiating. Burial will follow in the Ten Mile Baptist Cemetery in Ten Mile, W.Va.

The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the graveside.

Buckhannon-Upshur powered to its first win of the season with a 15-3 rout of Wheeling Park, using balanced scoring from seven players despite a near 30-minute delay. Braylon Oldaker, Easton Rice and Tobias Marple netted three goals each as the Bucs improved to 1-1.
