WVWC Football Names 2018 Captains

Head coach Del Smith and the West Virginia Wesleyan Football team announced Luke Casey, Derrick Butler, and Devin Montgomery as the team captains for the 2018 season. “Heading into our third year as a staff, this is by far the best locker room we have ever had” remarked head coach, Del Smith.” “These three young men represent our program very well and hands down received the majority of the team votes.”

Casey, a red-shirt senior, played all 7 games for the Bobcats last season throwing for 510 yards and 2 touchdowns. In total, Casey has appeared 19 games over his career at Wesleyan. “Luke’s growth over the past three years has been really fun to be a part of.” said 3rd year head coach, Del Smith. “Stories like his are the reason you coach. The maturity and development that happen for a young man from 18-23 are very important. Luke is going to be wildly successful in whatever he pursues post football.”

Butler, a senior, appeared in 11 games in 2017 for the Cats and has appeared in nearly 30 straight games over the corse of his career. A Waldorf, MD native, Butler is the son of Roy Butler and Joyce Dorsey. “Derrick is as steady as they come in his preparation and approach to the game of football” mentioned Smith. “He is the ultimate team guy and willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win. I am excited to see him devlope into a team leader.”

Montgomery, a junior, battled injuries during his sophomore campaign and still amassed 826 yards on only 117 carries. Montgomery finished 4th in rushing in the Mountain East and had nearly 100 less carries that the leaders. “I have a lot of respect for a teammate that can battle injury and maintain their voice in the locker room” said Smith. “You have obviously earned your teammates respect when you still have an impact under those circumstances. We are excited to see a healthy Devin in 2018.”

The Bobcats open the 2018 season on Saturday, Sep. 1 when they host Concord University for a 12 p.m. kick.
