WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital expands cancer detection with new PET/CT and Prostate MRI services

WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital is proud to announce the addition of two cutting-edge imaging services: PET/CT and Prostate MRI. These advanced technologies provide enhanced diagnostic capabilities for early cancer detection, critical for improving patient outcomes. As the American Cancer Society predicts nearly 2 million new cancer cases in 2025, these services will offer invaluable support to local patients facing cancer diagnoses.

Prostate cancer is particularly common, with approximately 1 in 8 men diagnosed during their lifetime. Statistics show that 6-10 men over the age of 65 will develop the disease. Early detection plays a key role in successful treatment, and the new imaging services at St. Joseph’s Hospital are designed to help detect and stage cancer more accurately.

“When we hear the word cancer, it is something that has affected everyone, whether personally or someone they know or love,” Tom Nestor, WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital Director of Imaging Services and Mission Integration, said. “The American Cancer Society has sobering statistics year in and year out of people who will be diagnosed with this disease. While treatments vary, early detection is one of the most effective ways to ensure positive outcomes from a cancer diagnosis. And that is why here at St. Joseph’s Hospital, we are very blessed and excited to be able to offer some new advanced imaging procedures right here in Buckhannon. PET/CT and Prostate MRI are two modalities that give physicians detailed images and information that are critical in detection and staging of disease. The information directly affects diagnosis, treatment planning and targeted biopsy success. So, being able to offer these services right here in our community to increase access, decrease travel and offer familiar smiling faces is something we take great pride in. If you find yourself in need of these services, contact your doctor and know we are here to help.”

These imaging services are designed to provide crucial insights into the detection, staging and treatment of cancer. PET/CT scans are particularly useful in identifying cancers at an early stage and monitoring the effectiveness of treatments. The Prostate MRI technology offers highly detailed images of the prostate, allowing for more accurate detection and targeted biopsies.

Our communities can access these new imaging services at St. Joseph’s Hospital without the need to travel far from home. For those in need, a referral from a primary care provider is required to schedule an appointment.

St. Joseph’s Hospital remains committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to Upshur County and beyond. These new imaging services mark an important step forward in the fight against cancer, offering patients and their families a better chance at early detection and successful treatment.

For more information about these services or to schedule an appointment, please contact your primary care provider.
