Witt has 27 points for Lady ‘Cats in 76-71 setback to ABU

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (1-5, 0-5) women`s basketball team was defeated in a MEC matchup versus Alderson Broaddus (3-6, 2-3) by a 76-71 score Wednesday night in Rockefeller center.

WVWC Leaders
Emma Witt had a career-high and team-leading 27 points and brought down nine rebounds. M`laya Ainsworth added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Courtney Wilfong scored 10 points and passed five assists.

Inside the First Half
The Battlers started the game with a 9-5 lead. A layup from Witt and a Shelby Genes three-pointer gave WVWC their first lead of the game 10-9. Alderson Broaddus responded with a 5-0 lead and led 13-10. The Lady Bobcats ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run and led 21-15.

The Battlers found a rhythm to begin the second quarter cutting the deficit to one 23-22 before Ainsworth and Courtney Wilfong scored a combined nine points and WVWC led 32-22. Iyahnna Williams kept the Battlers in it scoring four of the final six points of the half for Alderson Broaddus but the offensive attack from the Bobcats was too much and they led 34-28 at the half.

Inside the Second Half
After a layup from Electra Allembert and two made free throws from Witt, the Lady Bobcats led 28-28 to begin the second half. After exchanging the next two possessions, Alderson Broaddus went on a 7-3 scoring run and trailed 45-42. Imani Jackson scored the Lady Bobcat’s next five points as they led 50-44. After made shots from behind the arc from both teams, the Battlers scored the final six points of the third quarter and the score was tied 53-53.

Alderson Broaddus earned their first lead since the first quarter on a shot from behind the arc from Cassandra Smith to begin the fourth quarter 56-53. Wesleyan fought back to retake the lead on a jumper from Witt 59-58. Londaisha Smith put the Battlers back in front with a jumper 60-59. Alderson Broaddus didn’t lose the lead for the remainder of the game before winning, 76-71.
