Winter weather advisory: Snow, ice could make Tuesday morning commute tricky

If you’re planning to head out early Tuesday morning, you might want to give yourself some extra time — the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Upshur County and much of north-central West Virginia.

The advisory is in effect from 11 p.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Tuesday. We’re looking at up to two inches of snow and possibly a coating of ice as well.

The NWS is warning of “slippery road conditions” that could make the Tuesday morning commute tricky. If you do have to get out, take it slow and check wv511.org for the latest road conditions.

Snow should start falling late Monday night into early Tuesday morning as the low drops to about 28 degrees. Then we’ll get a brief window of freezing rain after 3 a.m. as things warm up a bit, according to the NWS.

Tuesday is when most of the action happens. Expect a rain and snow mix before 10 a.m., then mostly rain through early afternoon, with the possibility of snow mixing back in after 1 p.m. Highs will reach about 39 degrees.

The good news for those of us along the I-79 corridor? We’re likely to see more rain than snow compared to folks farther north or up in the higher elevations, where several inches of snow are possible.

By Tuesday afternoon, the system is expected to move out to the east. Wednesday looks nice — mostly sunny with a high around 37 degrees.

Fair warning, though: it’s going to stay cold. Tuesday and Wednesday nights will see lows in the low to mid 20s, and Thursday only warms up to about 34 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.

And don’t get too comfortable with the dry weather — another system is already lining up for late in the week. There’s a chance of snow Friday morning, possibly mixing with rain in the afternoon, and rain looks more likely Friday night into Saturday.

Bottom line: bundle up, because temperatures are expected to stay below normal all week.
