West Virginia tops 400,000 total COVID-19 cases, DHHR announces Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 15,687 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 219 since the last report. In total, the state has reported 401,796 cases since the pandemic began, including 5,453 new cases today.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (159), Barbour (94), Lewis (110), Randolph (289) and Webster (35) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 15 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Fourteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 64-year old female from Raleigh County, a 65-year old male from Braxton County, an 81-year old male from Mason County, a 78-year old female from Wood County, a 78-year old female from Marshall County, an 82-year old female from Raleigh County, a 77-year old female from Marshall County, an 86-year old male from Wood County, a 47-year old male from Raleigh County, a 71-year old male from Grant County, an 86-year old male from Marshall County, a 78-year old male from Mineral County, a 73-year old female from Wood County, and a 66-year old male from Putnam County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 20, 2022, there are currently 15,687 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 14 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,590 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 915 residents are hospitalized with the virus (69% unvaccinated, 31% vaccinated), with 215 currently in intensive care (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated) and 125 on a ventilator (90% unvaccinated, 10% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 25.01%.

A total of 945,340 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 370,082 have received their booster dose.
