West Virginia surpasses 200,000 total COVID-19 cases as hospitalizations near record levels

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 21,752 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 252 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (381), Barbour (300), Lewis (191), Randolph (309) and Webster (82) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 17 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 65-year old male from Harrison County, a 44-year old male from Logan County, and a 66-year old female from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of September 7, 2021, there have been 3,496,138 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 200,308 total cases and 3,151 deaths,” according to a press release.

More than 700 residents are hospitalized with the virus, with 216 currently in intensive care and 112 on a ventilator. Those are all at or near record levels, according to the DHHR. The daily percent positive was 14.55%.

A total of 919,923 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
