West Virginia reports highest daily increase in new COVID-19 cases since Feb. 12

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 433 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

The increase was the largest daily jump since Feb. 12 and comes as the average number of new daily cases has increased by more than 50 percent in the last two weeks.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (7), Lewis (7), Randolph (3) and Webster (7) counties.

A total of 37 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

Five additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 85-year old male from Fayette County, a 70-year old male from Kanawha County, an 80-year old female from Wood County, a 90-year old female from Kanawha County, and a 44-year old male from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 25, 2021, there have been 2,393,602 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 139,251 total cases and 2,624 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 5,695 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 130,932 people have recovered and 2,624 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.88%.

A total of 280,181 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
