West Virginia reports first increase in active COVID-19 cases in more than two months, seven new deaths

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 987 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 16 since the last report — the first statewide increase since May 9.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (13), Barbour (2), Lewis (17), Randolph (11) and Webster (13) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of three active cases in the last 24 hours.

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease in the last 24 hours, according to the DHHR – a 75-year old male from Barbour County, a 68-year old female from Raleigh County, an 82-year old female from Kanawha County, a 63-year old male from Kanawha County, a 72-year old female from Mercer County, a 64-year old male from Nicholas County, and an 80-year old female from Jefferson County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of July 14, 2021, there have been 3,056,269 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 164,763 total cases and 2,916 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 1.65%.

A total of 864,287 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 48% of the state.
