West Virginia reports 9,285 active COVID cases, nine new deaths on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 9,285 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 558 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (85), Barbour (96), Lewis (58), Randolph (119) and Webster (29) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of four active cases in the last 24 hours.

Nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 66-year old female from Cabell County, a 47-year old female from Grant County, an 86-year old male from Jackson County, an 88-year old male from Hancock County, an 87-year old female from Grant County, a 69-year old female from Logan County, a 77-year old female from Greenbrier County, an 80-year old male from Cabell County, and a 73-year old female from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 23, 2021, there are currently 9,285 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been nine deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,251 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 580 residents are hospitalized with the virus (80% unvaccinated, 20% vaccinated), with 203 currently in intensive care (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated) and 103 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 10.93%.

A total of 915,349 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
