West Virginia reports 8,598 active COVID cases, 20 new deaths Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 8,598 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 339 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (84), Barbour (76), Lewis (56), Randolph (87) and Webster (28) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 10 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 87-year old male from Randolph County, a 62-year old male from Logan County, an 81-year old male from Gilmer County, an 85-year old female from Harrison County are a 68-year old male from Morgan County, an 80-year old female from Grant County, a 63-year old female from Fayette County, a 64-year old male from Preston County, a 53-year old male from Wood County, a 69-year old female from Mercer County, an 87-year old male from Raleigh County, a 59-year old female from Jefferson County, a 51-year old male from Putnam County, a 77-year old female from Grant County, a 68-year old male from Mingo County, a 65-year old male from Mineral County, a 69-year old male from Pocahontas County, a 59-year old male from Marion County, a 52-year old male from Monongalia County, and a 73-year old female from Randolph County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 21, 2021, there are currently 8,598 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 20 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,211 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 615 residents are hospitalized with the virus (81% unvaccinated, 19% vaccinated), with 209 currently in intensive care (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated) and 116 on a ventilator (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 11.08%.

A total of 913,426 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
