West Virginia reports 1,830 active COVID cases, eight new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 1,830 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 134 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (24), Barbour (15), Lewis (16), Randolph (15) and Webster (1) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of two active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Eight additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 64-year old male from Berkeley County, a 58-year old female from Lincoln County, a 94-year old female from Marion County, a 91-year old female from Cabell County, a 69-year old male from Marion County, a 75-year old female from Mineral County, a 63-year old male from Ohio County, and a 78-year old female from Logan County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 17, 2022, there are currently 1,830 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been eight deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,903 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 138 residents are hospitalized with the virus (51% unvaccinated, 49% vaccinated), with 19 currently in intensive care (37% unvaccinated, 63% vaccinated) and 9 on a ventilator (67% unvaccinated, 33% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 20.88%. 

A total of 976,650 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 485,882 booster doses have been administered.
