Softball Lady ‘Cats get home split with Salem

BUCKHANNON –  The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team played a non-conference doubleheader against the Tigers of Salem University Tuesday evening. Game one was highlighted by good pitching and a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for the Lady Bobcats to win a 3-2 decision. Game two the offense for the Lady Bobcats struggled as Salem won a 6-0 decision.

Game 1

Kendall Stoffel pitched the whole eight innings allowing one earned run and collecting eight strikeouts. Salem got on the board first with a runner coming to score on a infield error to make it 1-0. In the fourth inning, Wesleyan tied it up with a one-run single from Carlee Iannone. Salem got another run in the top of the fifth to make it 2-1. In the bottom fifth, Mollie White came in to pinch hit and ripped a one-run double scoring Jenna Gomez to tie the game at 2-2. The game went into extras with the runner on second rule to start the inning. In the top eighth, the Tigers wouldn’t bring across any runs. In the bottom eight, Maya Reyes was on third base as Sydney Leadbetter hit a fly ball to center field. The throw to the plate was wide left down the third base line and Reyes would come in to score winning the game for the Lady Bobcats.

Game 2

The Lady Bobcats wouldn’t score in game two as five fielding errors helped the Tigers lead their way to victory. Kelsi Brown took the loss pitching three innings giving up two earned runs. The second at bat of the game, Salem hit a solo shot over the left centerfield wall to make it 1-0. In the third, a two-run single increased their lead to 3-0. Victoria Wehrberger came into pitch the fourth inning and the Tigers hit around to bring in three more runs. Josi Fix came in relief and pitch 3 1/3 innings only allowing two hits and giving up no earned runs.

The Lady Bobcats are set to play their final weekend series of the year at home starting with Concord University Friday, April 26, starting at 3 p.m.
