West Virginia reports 1,496 active COVID cases, seven new deaths on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 1,496 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 171 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (28), Barbour (11), Lewis (4), Randolph (16) and Webster (2) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of three active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 74-year old male from Jefferson County, a 69-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 98-year old male from Mercer County, an 87-year old female from Berkeley County, a 72-year old male from Wirt County, a 39-year old female from Wayne County, and a 49-year old male from Wayne County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 12, 2022, there are currently 1,496 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been seven deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,893 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 119 residents are hospitalized with the virus (52% unvaccinated, 48% vaccinated), with 25 currently in intensive care (48% unvaccinated, 52% vaccinated) and 11 on a ventilator (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 7.33%. 

A total of 975,952 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 480,790 booster doses have been administered.
