West Virginia announces a record-high number of new COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Sunday that 1,425 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, a record single-day increase.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (6), Barbour (10), Lewis (12), Randolph (6) and Webster (8) counties.

A total of 102 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. Sunday’s update:

  • Added two confirmed cases to Nov. 29
  • Removed one probable and one confirmed case from Nov. 30
  • Removed three probable cases and added one confirmed case to Dec. 1
  • Added three probable cases to Dec. 2
  • Added one probable case and removed two confirmed cases from Dec. 3
  • Removed six confirmed cases from Dec. 4
  • Added six probable and six confirmed cases to Dec. 5

Nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 67-year old female from Wood County, an 82-year old male from Wood County, a 91-year old male from Mineral County, an 80-year old male from Fayette County, a 94-year old male from Preston County, an 83-year old male from Mineral County, a 71-year old male from Berkeley County, a 95-year old male from Hancock County, and an 81-year old male from Ohio County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of December 6, 2020, there have been 1,214,692 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 54,997 total cases and 838 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 19,077 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 35,082 people have recovered and 838 have died. The daily percent positive was 7.25%.
