Wesleyan volleyball team opens season with 2-2 mark

HARTSVILLE (SC) – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team started their 2024 campaign by traveling to Coker University. They beat Coker University and Francis Marion University 3-2 in both matches and go 2-2 on the weekend.

Friday Sept. 6th, Coker University: 3-2
Wesleyan started out winning the first set 25-19, then alternate winning sets until the fifth set. Wesleyan earned the victory winning the fifth set 15-11. Notable performers for Wesleyan included Emily Denison with 24 kills, 23 digs, and two aces. Brooke Axe tallied 16 kills while Jalynn West recorded 51 assists along with 14 digs in the match.

Friday, Sept 6th, Belmont Abbey College: 2-3
The Lady Bobcats struck first winning the first two sets 25-23 and 25-18. Belmont Abbey came back and won the next three sets to take the victory. Notable performers in this match include Denison with 20 kills and 20 digs. Axe collected 16 kills along with 6sixblocks. West matched her assist total from the previous match with 51 assists and nine digs.

Saturday, Sept. 7th Wingate University: 0-3
The Lady Bobcats were swept by Wingate in three straight sets. Notable performers are Alexis Moechler with two aces and 10 digs. Helena Kelly collected 11 assists as the setter. Bhrooke Axe led the team with five kills.

Saturday, Sept. 7th Francis Marion University: 3-2
The Lady Bobcats, looking to snap their two game losing streak, faced Francis Marion University in the final game of the weekend. Francis Marion won the first two sets, but Wesleyan rallied back and win the next thee sets to take the win. After winning a close third set 25-23, the Lady Bobcats took the momentum and won set four, 25-12 and set five, 15-11. Olivia Albrecht led the team in kills with 14 and Axe a close second with 13 kills. Alexis Moechler served four aces and lead the team in digs with 12.

The volleyball team with have their first home match against the Tigers of Salem University Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 pm.
