BUCKHANON — After coming off an 0-4 weekend at home, the West Virginia Wesleyan softball team was looking to turn the script in conference play. A doubleheader against rivals, Davis and Elkins would prove to be a tough matchup for the Lady Bobcats. A close game one 7-6 loss was followed by a 6-0 loss in game two.
Game 1:
Josi Fix took the rubber in game 1 and pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing seven hits, two earned runs with one strikeout. Wesleyan jumped out in front in the bottom of the first with an RBI ground out from Kendall Stoffel that scored Brooklyn Osburn. Carlee Iannone hit a one-run single scoring Andie Dizon to make it 2-0 after the first inning. Davis and Elkins answered in the top of the second with unearned run from an error and later a three-run home run to make it 4-2. In the third, Wesleyan fought back to with a one-run single from Iannone that brought home Kendall Stoffel. Kelsi Brown hit a one-run single followed by a two-run single from pinch hitter Emma Jackson. Wesleyan retook the lead 6-4 after the fifth inning. Davis and Elkins answered in the top of the sixth with a pair of one-run doubles and and a one-run single to make it 7-6 Davis and Elkins.
Game 2:
The second game was plagued with quiet bats and defensive errors on Wesleyan’s end. Wesleyan started the game with a 1-2-3 inning in the first on defense. In the second inning Kendall Stoffel walked the first two batters then strikeout the next two making it two outs with runners on first and second. She got out of the jam with a fielders choice and a putout between Jenna Gomez and Savannah O’Shields in the middle of the infield. In the top of the third, Davis and Elkins scored four runs, two of which unearned due to fielding errors. Two more unearned runs came across in the top of the fourth. With runners at second and third with two outs, a fly ball to right field resulted in an error scoring both runners. Stofffel pitched five innings giving up six runs and two earned runs and take the loss. Victoria Wehrberger came in relief and pitch two perfect innings giving up no hits or earned runs.
The Lady Bobcats will travel to Glenville State to play a doubleheader Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
