Wesleyan lacrosse rolls past District of Columbia, 20-9

BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats pelted the lacrosse net Wednesday in a day game against the visiting University of the District of Columbia Firebirds and captured its second win of the season, 20-9, at Cebe Ross Field.

The game was up for grabs early as sides traded goals quickly through the first half of the first quarter.

The Firebirds got things started 25 seconds into the game when Jada Williams snapped an unassisted goal just after the opening draw. Wesleyan’s Talia Berardo posted two goals just 21 seconds apart a little more than three minutes later, then Williams tied it up 20 seconds after Berardo’s goal.

Noelle Fuller used only 10 more seconds to put the Lady Bobcats back up at 10:26 then Firebird Michelle Mitchell tied it again at three goals each with 6:40 to go in the opening quarter.

Wesleyan then went on a three-goal spree on scores by Makenzi Lewellyn, Erin Mobley and Berardo before the Firebirds squeezed another in with only two seconds remaining in a quarter that saw the Lady ‘Cats up 6-4.

After that, it was mostly the Berardo, Mobley and Williams show with Berardo claiming a total of eight goals and three assists on 18 shots, Mobley scoring five goals and three assists on six shots and the Firebirds’ Williams getting all but two of her team’s points with seven goals and one assist.

Also breaking the hat trick mark for Wesleyan was Lewellyn who had four goals and two assists.

Goalie time was split for the Lady Bobcats with Alexis Senn serving 26:32 for six saves and five goals-against, and Ella Gomez who minded the goal for 33:28 and had eight saves while giving up four goals.

The Lady Bobcats head to Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va. on Saturday, Mar. 16. The time of the game is yet to be determined.
