Wesleyan lacrosse falls in fourth straight after 17-9 loss to Senators

ELKINS — The West Virginia Wesleyan College lacrosse team found early success against the Davis and Elkins College Senators, Sunday, but couldn’t keep pace into the second half and fell 17-9 in Elkins.

The 4-9 Lady Bobcats (0-4 in the MEC) began with a pair of goals by Erin Mobley just 25 seconds apart, both in the final minute of the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead. The Senators’ Haleigh Forand scored the game’s first goal at 12:47.

Rylee Anderson got Davis and Elkins even in the second period at 11:29, then 14 seconds later Ke’ya Stevens put the Senators up 3-2. Stevens added another at 7:10 and Jessica Dwyer pushed the lead to 5-2 with a goal at 6:23.

But the Lady Bobcats made a late push before the half and Makenzi Lewellyn got Wesleyan to within a goal with 2:29 remaining before the whistle.

The third quarter was pretty much all Senators who outscored the Lady Bobcats 6-2 and in the fourth, Davis and Elkins dropped another six goals on the Lady Bobcats while Wesleyan managed just four.

Team scoring leader Talia Berardo once again led the Wesleyan offense with three goals and one assist on 11 shots. Mobley had the two early goals and Kaitlyn Canby made the best of her two shots as both went into the back of the Senator net.

The Lady Bobcats go on the road to Notre Dame College Saturday, Apr. 13 for a 2 p.m. start.
