Volleyball Little Lady Bucs open season on the road at Bridgeport and Robert L. Bland

BRIDGEPORT – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Buc volleyball team recently opened their 2023 season.

They started their year at Bridgeport dropping a 2-0 decision, falling 25-17 and 25-20.

Madelyn Tucker, Kristine Frye and Gabriella Weese each had a kill against Bridgeport while Jayla Westfall had a team-high five assists.

Frye and Braylea Squires each recorded two aces apiece.

The junior varsity Little Lady Bucs dropped a 2-1 decision to Bridgeport losing the first set by a 25-11 score but rebounding to take set two by a 25-20 score before losing the last set by a 15-10 score.

The varsity Little Lady Bucs followed that up with a 2-0 setback on the road to Robert L. Bland falling 25-8 and 25-10.

Tucker, Frye and Weese each had on kill while Westfall led the teams in assists with three.

Frye and Squires each had one ace.

“Bridgeport always has tough teams,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Sheena Westfall. “For having our first game and losing the eighth-grade class we did from last year, we hung in there with them. We started off slow in the first set but seemed to get ourselves together for the second set. The game against Bland, we struggled to play our game. We had a player with us who missed our first game, so I think the girls were trying to adjust with a different lineup. We made too many simple errors that gave Bland too many easy points. The times we stayed under control on offense we scored and through Bland off.”

The Little Lady Bucs were slated to have a busy week this week as they were scheduled to play East Fairmont on Monday, Taylor County Wednesday, and Belington Thursday.

They will face Note Dame at home on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
