Volleyball Lady ‘Cats lose ninth straight in 3-1 setback to GSC

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-21, 3-12) volleyball team won the opening set but fell in a road match versus Glenville State (3-18, 1-14) on Tuesday night at the Waco Center.
 
WVWC Leaders
Joelle Lalla posted eight kills and notched two block solos and three block assists. Maddi Carpenter dished out 15 assists while Payton Hefner passed 10. Seniors Anaya Hyman and Kennedy Kuhns each recorded a service ace. Makenzie Yates, Hefner and Kuhns all snagged six digs.
 
Glenville State Leaders
Skylar Mace (18), Karlei Shaver (11) and Sydney Goodrich (11) eclipsed double-digit kills. Julia King distributed 21 assists. Hannah McKown and Goodrich both smashed three service aces. Lily Emerson and Mace both had two block solos and two block assists. Lindsay Winkler had a match-high 17 digs.
 
Inside Set One
The Lady Bobcats broke a 4-4 tie after Lexis Tatum connected on a kill. Tatum delivered another kill on the next play to make the score 6-4 in favor of WVWC. The Bobcats extended their lead to three points after a GSC ball handling error. Glenville State tied the score at 11-11. After a Pioneer service error, Hyman sliced a service ace to put Wesleyan ahead 13-11. GSC responded and tied the score at 13. 
 
Kills from Lundy and Tatum gave Wesleyan another two-point lead. The Pioneers tied the score at 15. Wesleyan ripped off a four-point scoring run to take a 19-15 lead, capped off by a kill from Yates. The Pioneers roared back and took a 21-20 lead late in the set. Wesleyan answered and won the final four points of the first set. Wesleyan won set one, 25-21.
 
Inside Set Two
With the Lady Bobcats holding a 4-3 lead, the Pioneers ignited a 4-0 run to go up 7-4. The Lady Bobcats regained the lead at 11-10 after a block solo from Jayla Cowherd. Glenville State responded with a seven-point scoring run to take a 17-11. The Pioneers tied the match score at one after taking set two, 25-15.
 
Inside Set Three
Both teams opened the third set with separate 3-0 scoring runs. Glenville State broke the tie with a 4-0 run. Yates tied the score at 10 after a kill. The Pioneers amassed an 8-2 run to go up 18-12. The final five decisions of the third set went to GSC en route to a 25-14 set three victory.
 
Inside Set Four
A kill from Lalla put Wesleyan up 5-3. GSC claimed an 8-5 lead after scoring five consecutive points. Wesleyan cut the Pioneer lead to two points at 15-13 following an attack error from Glenville State. The Pioneers won 10 of the final 13 points to win set four, 25-16.

The Lady Bobcats will conclude their Mountain East Conference schedule with a road match versus Davis & Elkins on Friday at 7 p.m.
