Vandalia Health surgeon completes first 3D-printed foot bone surgery in West Virginia

Dr. Michael J. Hurst at Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center performed West Virginia’s first surgery using a custom 3D-printed navicular bone implant, advancing treatment options for complex foot injuries in the state.

Michael J. Hurst, DPM, a podiatric surgeon at Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center, recently performed the first surgery in West Virginia to implant a custom 3D-printed navicular bone. The procedure, completed in partnership with Restore3d, used advanced 3D printing technology to create a patient-specific implant to relieve pain and restore movement in the foot.

The navicular bone, located in the middle of the foot, is essential for walking and balance. In this case, the original bone was damaged by a loss of blood supply.

“This is a big step forward for patient care in our region,” Dr. Hurst said. “Restore3d’s custom, 3D-printed implant allowed us to match the patient’s unique anatomy. Using detailed scans of the patient’s foot, we were able to design a bone replacement that fit precisely. These implants can restore natural function and structure more precisely than traditional methods, improving outcomes and reducing recovery time.”

Dr. Hurst and Hannah Hughes, DPM, lead the podiatry practice at Davis Medical Center, specializing in advanced foot and ankle care. Both physicians are known for their expertise in treating complex conditions, and their commitment to advancing podiatric medicine extends beyond the operating room. Drs. Hurst and Hughes recently published research that provided critical insights into wound healing and infection risks associated with a common surgical approach for Achilles tendon injuries. Their dedication to clinical excellence and research helps bring the latest advancements in podiatric care to patients in the region.

“This surgery is a great example of the quality, forward-thinking care we’re bringing to our community,” said Ronald J. Andro, MSHSM, MSHES, BSN, RN, Senior Vice President of Davis Health System and Chief Administrative Officer of Davis Medical Center. “This groundbreaking procedure is the latest example of Dr. Hurst’s and Dr. Hughes’ commitment to bringing modern advancements in podiatric foot and ankle surgery to patients in our region. Their expertise in complex foot and ankle conditions, combined with innovative surgical approaches, has elevated the standard of care for reconstructive procedures in our state. We’re proud of our team and their commitment to providing advanced treatments close to home.”

“This procedure is just one example of the unique solutions that Drs. Hurst and Hughes are now able to provide to patients with challenging foot and ankle injuries and diagnoses,” said Ben Altmeyer, Regional Representative, Restore3d.
