Upshur County woman among nine COVID deaths reported in West Virginia on Monday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 8,746 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 539 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (72), Barbour (72), Lewis (72), Randolph (118) and Webster (32) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decline of 13 active cases since the Dec. 23 report.

Nine additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 80-year old female from Lincoln County, a 75-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 44-year old male from Kanawha County, an 82-year old male from Wood County, a 31-year old male from Raleigh County, a 73-year old female from Upshur County, a 70-year old female from Roane County, an 81-year old male from Braxton County, and a 64-year old female from Raleigh County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 27, 2021, there are currently 8,746 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been nine deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,260 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 575 residents are hospitalized with the virus (80% unvaccinated, 20% vaccinated), with 200 currently in intensive care (89% unvaccinated, 11% vaccinated) and 98 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 12.65%.

A total of 916,537 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
