Upshur County reports second COVID-19 death, five new cases on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources confirmed a second death in Upshur County due to COVID-19 on Thursday, a 77-year-old male.

Upshur County reported a net increase of five new cases of the virus on Thursday but dropped to green on the daily alert map. The infection rate in Upshur County fell slightly and remained in the orange category, but a surge in testing helped lower the county’s positivity rate from gold to green.

In Thursday’s update, the DHHR removed two confirmed cases from Upshur County — one from Oct. 16 and one from Oct. 20. They also added a probable case on Oct. 16, and added three probable and three confirmed cases on Oct. 22. That comes out to a net gain of five new cases.

The number of active cases in Upshur County dropped by one, to 54.

Statewide, the DHHR announced Thursday that 323 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

In addition to the Upshur County death, four others were reported in West Virginia on Thursday – a 77-year old male from Marshall County, a 95-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 73-year old female from Hancock County and an 80-year old male from Brooke County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10:00 a.m., October 22, 2020, there have been 704,001 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 21,057 total cases and 418 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Thursday in Barbour, Berkeley, Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Cabell, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Ritchie, Summers, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Wetzel, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 4,473 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 16,166 people have recovered and 418 have died. The daily percent positive was 2.73%.
