Upshur County reports 170 active COVID-19 cases as 2020 comes to a close

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 1,109 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (22), Barbour (21), Lewis (8), Randolph (7) and Webster (4) counties.

A total of 170 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. That is an all-time high. Thursday’s update:

  • Added seven probable and 13 confirmed cases to Dec. 30
  • Removed 12 probable and added 12 confirmed cases to Dec. 29
  • Removed 12 probable and added 12 confirmed cases to Dec. 28
  • Added one confirmed case to Dec. 27
  • Removed three probable cases and added three confirmed cases to Dec. 25
  • Removed one probable case and added one confirmed case to Dec. 24

Upshur County remains red on the daily alert map.

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:

  • a 34-year old male from Wyoming County,
  • a 73-year old male from Logan County,
  • a 73-year old male from Mercer County,
  • a 67-year old male from Wood County,
  • a 76-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • an 81-year old male from Berkeley County,
  • a 76-year old female from Mercer County,
  • a 69-year old male from Monongalia County,
  • a 68-year old female from Cabell County,
  • an 82-year old female from Nicholas County,
  • an 89-year old male from Harrison County,
  • a 73-year old female from Cabell County,
  • a 97-year old female from Greenbrier County,
  • a 94-year old male from Greenbrier County,
  • a 61-year old female from Putnam County,
  • a 76-year old male from Ohio County,
  • a 70-year old male from Marion County,
  • a 59-year old male from Wood County,
  • a 73-year old male from Greenbrier County,
  • a 94-year old female from Hancock County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of December 31, 2020, there have been 1,498,692 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 85,334 total cases and 1,338 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 24,488 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 59,508 people have recovered and 1,338 have died. The daily percent positive was 5.54%.
