Upshur County man among 37 new COVID-19 deaths reported in West Virginia on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 5,271 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 680 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (126), Barbour (68), Lewis (44), Randolph (46) and Webster (19) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 28 active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Thirty-seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 70-year old male from Kanawha County, an 81-year old female from Mercer County, a 63-year old female from Greenbrier County, a 47-year old female from Wirt County, a 63-year old female from Jackson County, a 70-year old male from Lincoln County, an 84-year old male from Mingo County, a 67-year old female from Mercer County, a 73-year old female from Cabell County, an 85-year old female from Putnam County, a 63-year old female from Mercer County, an 84-year old female from Cabell County, a 54-year old female from Kanawha County, an 89-year old female from Cabell County, a 62-year old male from Kanawha County, a 62-year old female from Mineral County, a 96-year old female from Berkeley County, a 95-year old female from Tyler County, a 77-year old male from Berkeley County, an 83-year old female from Boone County, an 82-year old female from Marshall County, a 69-year old female from Putnam County, a 72-year old male from Upshur County, a 54-year old male from Mercer County, a 94-year old female from Wood County, a 78-year old male from Mercer County, an 82-year old female from Kanawha County, a 71-year old female from Brooke County, an 88-year old male from Kanawha County, a 64-year old female from Kanawha County, a 73-year old male from Kanawha County, a 61-year old male from Wirt County, an 88-year old male from Kanawha County, a 45-year old female from Kanawha County, an 87-year old male from Harrison County, a 50-year old female from Boone County, and an 87-year old female from Cabell County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of February 16, 2022, there are currently 5,271 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 37 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,104 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 792 residents are hospitalized with the virus (66% unvaccinated, 34% vaccinated), with 193 currently in intensive care (76% unvaccinated, 24% vaccinated) and 118 on a ventilator (81% unvaccinated, 19% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 10.48%. 

A total of 957,903 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 403,853 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
