Upshur Board of Education narrows pool of applicants for superintendent position to three

BUCKHANNON – Upshur County Board of Education members are considering a candidate forum to assist them in selecting the next superintendent of Upshur County Schools.

Members of the Upshur County Board of Education met in a special meeting Friday at West Virginia Wesleyan College to conduct interviews for the position of superintendent.

Dr. Debra Harrison has served as the Interim Superintendent of Upshur County Schools since Aug. 29, 2022, following the resignation of Dr. Sara Lewis Stankus when she was tapped by West Virginia State Superintendent of Schools David L. Roach as the new Deputy Superintendent of Schools.

Upshur County Board of Education President Dr. Tammy Samples confirmed by email Friday that board members had interviewed three candidates, whom they had narrowed down from a larger pool of applicants. All board members were present for the meeting.

“We cannot share names of applicants at this time,” Samples wrote. “We are considering a candidate forum.”

Samples said the pool of candidates came from applicants who responded to the search the Upshur County BOE posted on the West Virginia School Board Association website, on the state job bank and on the Upshur County Schools website.

“We had both in-state and out-of-state candidates who applied for the position,” Sample told My Buckhannon. “No interviews were conducted via the Internet.”

Samples said the Upshur County BOE intends to hire a superintendent by mid-May.

The next regular meeting of the Upshur County Board of Education is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 in the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Auditorium.
