Upshur, Barbour and Randolph counties all report new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 156 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, including three in Upshur County.

The new local cases come one day after Upshur County Schools announced its first COVID-19 case, a student at Buckhannon Academy Elementary School. Upshur is now within three new cases of turning orange on the tweaked West Virginia alert map; it has already turned orange on the Harvard map, which does not include a gold color.

Randolph County reported seven new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, while Barbour and Upshur counties each announced three new cases. According to the DHHR, nearly 100 cases are currently active in the three-county region: 49 in Barbour, 26 in Upshur and 23 in Randolph.

Five additional deaths have been attributed to the disease statewide, according to the DHHR – a 56-year old male from Fayette County, a 68-year old male from Kanawha County, a 95-year old male from Boone County, an 81-year old female from Putnam County, and a 68-year old male from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., September 30, 2020, there have been 561,113 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 15,848 total cases and 350 deaths,”

New cases were reported Wednesday in Barbour, Berkeley, Boone, Cabell, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Greenbrier, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Roane, Taylor, Tucker, Upshur, Wayne, Wetzel, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 3,991 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 11,507 people have recovered and 350 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.86%.
