Two Barbour County residents among 19 new COVID deaths reported Friday as cases tick back up

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 16,742 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 1,055 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (176), Barbour (142), Lewis (141), Randolph (345) and Webster (54) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 17 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Nineteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – 77-year old male from Raleigh County, a 76-year old female from Raleigh County, a 94-year old male from Barbour County, a 76-year old female from Marion County, a 61-year old female from Kanawha County, a 76-year old female from Preston County, an 85-year old female from Kanawha County, an 80-year old female from Calhoun County, a 61-year old female from Berkeley County, a 76-year old male from Kanawha County, a 91-year old female from Monongalia County, a 66-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 53-year old female from Barbour County, an 86-year old female from Kanawha County, a 70-year old male from Boone County, an 87-year old female from Marion County, an 84-year old female from Berkeley County, a 55-year old female from Berkeley County, and a 79-year old male from Hancock County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 21, 2022, there are currently 16,742 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 19 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,609 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 952 residents are hospitalized with the virus (71% unvaccinated, 29% vaccinated), with 216 currently in intensive care (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated) and 131 on a ventilator (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 23.78%.

A total of 945,371 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 370,160 have received their booster dose.
