A free healthcare workshop will be held Thursday, October 8, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Tucker County School Annex in Parsons. Child care is available, and each participant will receive a free book and workbook.

Registered nurse Tiffany Auvil drew on her nursing career and experience caring for her late husband, Dave, to develop the series, according to her release. A $5,000 Tucker County Pitch Contest award will pay for 550 sets of her book, The No BS Guide for Caregivers: How to Survive the Healthcare Maze, and companion workbook.

“I want people to know they can be an active partner in their healthcare—or speak up for someone they love,” Auvil said in the release. “They can ask questions, say when something doesn’t make sense, and ask for the help they need. My hope is that they leave feeling more confident and less lost, knowing their voice matters.”

The sessions cover appointment preparation, insurance and billing terms and ways to follow up on unanswered questions. They are open to caregivers and people managing their own healthcare, with time for questions but no individualized medical advice.

The Tucker County Family Support Center (PERC) and Tucker County Schools are partnering on the first workshop. More free sessions are planned elsewhere in the county.
