Total COVID cases in West Virginia since the pandemic began tops 300,000 mark

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 8,031 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 358 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (93), Barbour (58), Lewis (136), Randolph (93) and Webster (33) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of eight active cases over the weekend.

Twenty-eight additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 92-year old female from Calhoun County, a 46-year old male from Mingo County, an 81-year old female from Grant County, a 68-year old female from Wirt County, a 67-year old female from Nicholas County, an 89-year old female from Monongalia County, an 82-year old male from Mineral County, a 67-year old female from Hardy County, a 77-year old female from Marion County, a 75-year old male from Marion County, a 64-year old male from Mineral County, a 70-year old male from Wetzel County, a 75-year old female from Kanawha County, a 77-year old female from Putnam County, an 84-year old male from Hancock County, a 78-year old male from Wood County, a 90-year old female from Marion County, a 66-year old male from Brooke County, an 83-year old male from Grant County, a 71-year old male from Summers County, a 69-year old male from Wetzel County, a 61-year old male from Hampshire County, a 48-year old male from Mingo County, an 87-year old male from Mercer County, a 76-year old male from Fayette County, a 72-year old male from Marshall County, a 57-year old male from Braxton County, and a 56-year old female from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 6, 2021, there are currently 8,031 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 28 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,990 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 585 residents are hospitalized with the virus (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated), with 201 currently in intensive care (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated) and 103 on a ventilator (84% unvaccinated, 16% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 11.71%.

A total of 900,004 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 50% of the state.
