My Buckhannon is proud to present another spring of the Hank Ellis All-Stars. Each week, we will select a male and female athlete at Buckhannon-Upshur who has had an exemplary week on the baseball and softball diamonds, lacrosse fields, the track, and tennis courts.
Our Hank Ellis All-Stars for the week of May 11–May 17 are Braylea Squires and Zack Simmons.
Squires is a freshman on the Lady Buc softball team. In the regional tournament for B-U, where the team went 2-2, Squires posted an impressive .643 on-base percentage in four games. She hit .286, drove in two runs, scored four times, drew seven walks, and hit a home run in a 5-3 win against Woodrow Wilson.
Simmons is a junior on the Buccaneer track and field team and the lacrosse team. He had a unique weekend, advancing to the track and field state championship meet while also helping the lacrosse team capture the West Virginia Division II title. In the track regional championship, he was part of the 4×800-meter relay team that advanced to states with a time of 8:43.33. The team took 22 seconds off its previous best time. In lacrosse, he tallied one goal and two assists to help the Bucs to a 15-3 win over Jefferson County for the state title.
Congratulations to Squires and Simmons as our weekly winners of the Hank Ellis All-Stars honor.
