Tennis Lady Bucs get split with Lincoln and Morgantown

BUCKHANNON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team split a pair of home outings earlier this week as they downed Lincoln by a 4-3 score on Monday in Big 10 Conference action before losing to Morgantown by a 7-0 count on Wednesday in non-conference play at the West Virginia Wesleyan courts.

The Lady Bucs went down 2-1 against Lincoln after doubles action with the team of Madelyn Frye and Mya Critchfield getting the lone win at No. 2 by an 8-1 score over Alexis Efaw and Chelsey Brotherton.

The Lady Bucs rebounded to get three victories at singles for the team win.

Picking up the singles wins were Lainey Rowan over Jaden Harbert (8-1) at No. 2, Frye over Efaw (8-4) at No. 3 and Critchfield over McKenzie White (8-5) at No. 4.

“Our girls got a win which was great,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “Lincoln has a strong No. 1 seed (Keri Yanero) so we knew the matches with her would be tough but we won almost every other match that didn’t involve her. I love that No. 2 doubles team of Frye and Critchfield and Rowan at No. 2 singles didn’t just win but won convincingly. I think a lot of times it’s easy to “play down” to your opponents and make it closer than it should be but they played really well and took care of business.”

On Wednesday, the lone set won by B-U was Sammie Shay and Alexis Wucher at No. 3 doubles.

“Morgantown girls are really strong and I would argue probably the deepest girls team we face all season,” noted Rock. “For example their No. 1 and 3 seeds from last year are now on their No. 3 doubles team because they have so much depth on their roster and talented freshmen this season. I think our girls held their own a lot more than the scores show. I thought we played really well at doubles and were close to winning a few games in multiple matches.”

The split left the Lady Bucs with a 2-8 mark overall and a 2-3 record in Big 10 Conference play.

Their road match with North Marion on Thursday was rained out.

They will return to the courts Tuesday visiting Morgantown for a rematch at 4 p.m.
