National Teen Driver Safety Week runs October 18-24, with West Virginia highway safety officials urging parents and guardians to talk with teen drivers about speeding, seat belts and distractions.
The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program also wants families to discuss alcohol and other drugs and the risks of driving with passengers, according to a release from the West Virginia Department of Transportation.
Nationally, among passenger vehicle drivers ages 15-18 involved in fatal crashes in 2024, speeding was a factor for 33%, the release says. It also reports that 51% of teen drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts.
Parents can find discussion tips in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s teen-driving guide. Families can also review West Virginia’s graduated licensing requirements and driver education information for the state’s public schools.
For more information, visit the state highway safety program’s website or call its public information number, 304-926-2509.
