Stephen C. Hinzman Sr.

Stephen C. Hinzman, Sr., 82, of Buckhannon, W.Va., died Sunday, February 16, 2020, at his home.

He was born December 13, 1937, in Upshur County, W.Va., a son of the late Thomas B. and Sarah Ann Landis Hinzman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Franklin Hinzman and one sister, Irene Yoakum.

He is survived by two sons, Stephen C. Hinzman Jr., and wife Gwendlyn of South Hill, Va. and Bryan Hinzman and wife Michelle of Olympia, Wash.; two daughters, Susan Wilfong and husband Charles “Jim” of Buckhannon and Rebecca Heatherly and husband David of Kingsland, Ga.; two grandsons, Stephen E. Hinzman of Olympia and Tyler Heatherly of Kingsland; three granddaughters, Samantha Young and husband Sebastian of Olympia, and Carly and Sydney Heatherly both of Kingsland; two brothers, Arnold and Ronald Hinzman both of Buckhannon; three sisters, Doris Orsburn of Buckhannon, Leona Champ of Yankee Lake, Ohio and Wilda Bennett of Buckhannon and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hinzman served in the U.S. Navy, was a coal miner, and was a proud, nearly lifelong, member of the United Mine Workers of America.

He was also a member of the Excelsior Community in Upshur County for nearly 50 years and loved and was much loved by his neighbors and friends.

Mr. Hinzman loved fishing the local streams for smallmouth bass and trout and he loved photography, reading, old movies and his family.

Friends will be received Thursday, February 20, 2020, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. In honoring Mr. Hinzman’s wishes, he will be cremated following the visitation.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a children’s organization of your choice or WV Hospice.
