West Virginia is seeking proposals from health care providers that could take over daily operations at William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital in Weston.

The West Virginia Department of Health Facilities said in an October 9 release that the process also covers Mildred Mitchell-Bateman Hospital in Huntington. The state would retain ownership of both hospitals, with no sale involved.

The department is looking for organizations that have operated inpatient civil and forensic psychiatric facilities. A partner would bring management expertise and help develop behavioral health services supporting patient treatment and recovery.

“By exploring partnerships with experienced behavioral health providers, we have an opportunity to strengthen operations, improve patient outcomes, and ensure these hospitals are delivering the level of care our patients deserve,” Department of Health Facilities Cabinet Secretary Michael Caruso said in the release.

The department expects to receive proposals later this year.
