Special Olympics Upshur County has received a $3,000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund to support its annual Special Olympics Bowling program.

Alisa Lively, director of the Special Olympics Upshur County program, said the funds would be used to pay for ten weeks of bowling practices, transportation and registration fees for the state competition in Charleston, WV in December for its thirty athletes.

“This generous grant will afford our Upshur County athletes to practice and compete in the Special Olympics West Virginia State Competition on December 7 and 8 in Charleston. Practicing and competing is only part of the experience. The athletes get to travel, stay in a hotel and participate in a victory dance and dinner, all avenues to offer mainstreamed activities to our community members with mental and physical disabilities,” Lively said.

In both rural and urban settings, the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund supports hundreds of important organizations and programs in the communities where they operate with funding, time, expertise and resources. Weyerhaeuser made its first charitable donation in 1903 and has provided more than $266 million in grants through its formal giving program, which was established in 1948.
