Softball Lady ‘Cats get blanked twice by West Virginia State despite throwing a no-hitter

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team would go scoreless in both games to West Virginia State on Monday losing both games by a 2-0 score, despite tossing a no-hitter in game one.

Game 1

Pitcher Josi Fix threw a complete game no-hitter in game one. She gave up one earned run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The Lady Bobcats had five fielding errors throughout the game to keep the Yellow Jackets in it. The sacrifice fly broke the 0-0 tie and put the Yellow Jackets ahead. In the top of the seventh, two base runners reached on fielding errors in the infield. With a runner on third base and two outs, the second run for the Yellow Jackets scored on a fielding error at second base to make it a 2-0 game going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The bottom of the seventh started with a walk from Emma Jackson. A passed ball moved the runner to second base with no outs. A fielding error by the Yellow Jackets put runners on first and third with no outs. The Lady Bobcats pinch hit the next three batters and they would all be retired to end the game.

Game 2

Kendall Stoffel took the rubber in game two and pitch seven innings giving up five hits, one earned run while collecting four strikeouts. The Lady Bobcats collected seven hits but a similar story game one emerged as they left nine runners on base. Offensively, Brooklyn Osburn went 3-3 at the plate for the Lady Bobcats and Carlee Ianonne going 2-3 proved to be the consistent bats for the lineup. In the top of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets started things off with a double. The runner would advance to third on a wild pitch. With a runner on third and no outs, the next batter walked and the runner advanced to second drawing the attention of the Bobcat’s defense. A throw down to second scored the runner from third base making it 1-0. Later in the inning, the Yellow Jackets got two more runners on base from an error and fielders choice. A sacrifice fly scored another run to make it 2-0. The Lady Bobcats led off the bottom of the seventh with a single from Osburn and the next three batters were retired to end the game.

The Lady Bobcats will play Wheeling University at home, April 13 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
