Soccer ‘Cats blank Wheeling 1-0 for first victory of the year

WHEELING — On Wednesday, the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats took 72 minutes to score its first goal of the season which was enough to down Wheeling University 1-0 in Wheeling.

Sophomore midfielder John Hollis received a Dillon Rajkovic pass, feigned left to move Wheeling keeper Daniel Delo in that direction, then buried the shot to the right corner.

Also instrumental in Wesleyan’s victory was an incredible save by Bobcat sophomore keeper James Docherty just seven minutes after the Hollis goal. Wheeling set up a free kick from just beyond the left corner of the penalty box and Alvaro Ivanov curled a shot over the Bobcat wall which looked goal bound until Docherty leapt and smacked the ball with his right hand to propel it over the crossbar.

Wheeling went down a man in the 56th minute when Henri Falcon picked up a red card for spitting. Overall, game officials carded five Bobcats and four Cardinals.

The Bobcats out shot the Cardinals 11-10 and logged six corners to Wheeling’s four.

Wesleyan heads to the University of Charleston Sunday for a pivotal match against the incumbent MEC champion Golden Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
