Shirley Jean Brown

Shirley Jean Brown, 82, of French Creek, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born in Moorefield on April 23, 1943, a daughter of the late Durward “Jim” Mitchell Pancake and Katherine Pauline Rinker Pancake.

On July 22, 1960, she married her partner, Burlin Clinton Brown Jr. Together they spent forty-nine years raising a family and working together until his passing on January 21, 2009.

Along with her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by one brother, Charles “Bill” Pancake, and one sister, Bonnie Keller.

Forever cherishing their memories of Shirley are two children: Michael Brown and wife, Kenna, and Sandra “Sandy” Campbell and husband, Bill, all of French Creek; three grandchildren: Michelle Brown, Michael Brown Jr. and wife, Brittany, and Jennifer Small; eight great-grandchildren: Emmalee Randolph and husband, Trevur, Nevada Tyson, Desiree Russell and husband, Nathan, Dakota Smith, Dominic Smith, James Brown, Nicholas Brown, and Brooklynn Brown; four great-great-grandchildren: Caetta Randolph, Timberlee Russell, Tanner Russell, and Jacob Smith; three sisters: Mary Potts, Cora Leigh, and Debra Pancake; one brother, Douglas Pancake; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley and Burlin embarked on their journey into the retail world in 1972 when they purchased “Brown’s Grocery” in Rock Cave, a venture that blossomed under her stewardship.

Her charismatic personality and tireless work ethic made the grocery store a beloved local institution.

In 1995, Burl and Shirley retired, but not one to rest on her laurels, she moved to Florida and continued working in retail for another 29 years, proving her dedication and love for her profession.

Her work not only provided for her family but also brought joy to countless customers who were welcomed with a warm smile and friendly service.

As the author Maya Angelou beautifully expressed, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated… that’s what creates the richness and flavor of life.”

Shirley’s request for cremation has been honored by Clutter Funeral and Cremation, located at 21 Elnora Circle in Buckhannon.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

Clutter Funeral and Cremation is honored and privileged to serve the family of Shirley Jean Brown. Online condolences may be expressed at www.ClutterFuneralHome.com.
